Struggling With Grief? Here Are Some Ways to Cope

Grief is one of the most difficult emotions that people will have to face in their lifetime. Grief is also a unique experience that never affects two people in quite the same way. You may find that you struggle with your feelings with grief to the point that you feel depressed or you are no longer able to go about your normal life for an extended period. If you are struggling with grief, please remember that your feelings are valid--and that you can get through this period. The following are some simple yet potentially effective ways to cope with difficult grief.

Allow yourself to feel

Grief can take many forms. The death of a loved one is a complex experience that may cause a variety of emotions, such as sadness, anger, relief, and countless other feelings that many people do not realize are associated with grief until they experience it. Do not try to bottle up these feelings or pretend that they don’t exist: allow yourself to feel them so that you can cope with them.

Connect with the grave site

Many people find it comforting to make a connection with their loved ones grave site, whether you install an AFTR system that allows you to see and communicate with the site or you visit on a specific day of the week. Visiting the grave site allows you the chance to talk with your loved one and express feelings or words left unsaid.

Be around people who know what you’re feeling

If you are dealing with grief, you likely don’t want to feel coddled--but you don’t want to feel like you have to pretend you’re fine, either. Try to surround yourself with people who know what you’re going through, and who can let you experience your grief around them in a healthy way rather than expecting you to cover it up.

Set a good sleeping schedule

A good sleeping schedule is essential if you want to stay physically and emotionally healthy, no matter where you are at with your grief. Go to bed at a reasonable hour and let yourself sleep until you are well-rested. The better your sleep, the better you can work with your feelings during the day.

Give yourself some daily goals

One of the most common aspects of grief is an inability to take on everyday tasks. You can help combat this slump by giving yourself some daily goals. Don’t go overboard--even simple goals such as brushing your teeth every day or going for a walk around the block can be enough.

Grief is a difficult experience, but remember: you are not alone.
