Virtual Gravesite Visitation Experience Launches in Houston, TX

AFTR to Improve Cemetery Accessibility and Family Experience

HOUSTON, TX-- NOVEMBER 19, 2020 -- In a first for Houston, two area cemeteries are launching a gravesite visitation experience, going digital with AFTR, a death technology company. AFTR has rolled out its hardware at Forest Park East Cemetery and Grand View Funeral Home and Memorial Park/Bethany Cemetery, the state’s first locations to be certified to provide AFTR’s immersive, virtual experience.

While many cemeteries have shut their gates to visitors for public health reasons, and social distancing dictates smaller gatherings, funeral streaming has gone mainstream. AFTR’s solution addresses the obstacles to visiting a loved one following the funeral.

AFTR, based in Brooklyn, NY, offers two types of gravesite cameras and two levels of monthly cellular service that enable either photographic or audio-video virtual visits through a corresponding mobile application for iOS and Android devices. The high-tech cameras are weatherproof, solar-powered, and compatible with most monuments or markers.

The company has partnered with the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association, the National Funeral Directors Association, and the Monument Builders of North America, and offers the option to establish funeral homes and cemeteries as dealers for the cameras.

“We are thrilled to be launching in Pasadena and Webster as the first locations in the thHouston area. After losing my father, I was able to find solace in developing AFTR’s virtual experience as I looked for ways for my siblings and myself to connect with my late father’s memory,” said AFTR founder and CEO Joseph Schechter. “Now, more than ever, our goal is to help people stay connected to their loved ones despite geographic boundaries or public health challenges.” Schechter had been in the camera business for 13 years before founding AFTR, having developed a rear-view camera for trucks.
